Beyond The Scoreboard-Mets reliever Tyler Jay makes his much anticipated major league debut after an improbable journey.

After being released by the Minnesota Twins in 2019, Tyler Jay had plenty of time to reflect on whether or not he would ever be able to fulfill his ambition of pitching in the main leagues.

"Perhaps every day," Jay remarked during his much anticipated New York Mets debut on Thursday, nine years after the Twins selected the left-hander with the sixth overall pick in the first round of the 2015 MLB Draft.

In the Mets' 16-4 victory over the Atlanta Braves, Jay pitched two innings while giving up one run. His teammates honored him as pitcher of the game, recognizing his perseverance despite an unexpected journey to the majors.

It means a lot that they were so thrilled and excited for me, Jay remarked.

Jay, twenty-nine had to overcome a condition known as eosinophilic esophagitis (EOE) in order to resume playing for the Joliet Slammers, an independent Frontier League team located close to his home in the Chicago region. Due to the disease's impact on the digestive system, he lost weight, which made his efforts on the mound more challenging. "You just get up every day and keep grinding, and every night you wonder if this is worth it," Jay remarked. "I have a great support system at home, and they have encouraged me to keep going even when there have been moments when I didn't believe in myself." After seeing and giving Jay an opportunity, the Mets called to announce that he was being promoted from Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday.

Jay was able to celebrate his debut with his family at Truist Park, which included his mother, wife, and cousin. After the game, when asked how he felt, Jay replied, "It was everything I could ask for." "I believe I'm still taking it all in." It's absurd. It's amazing. I believe that after the first few pitches, I became somewhat more composed. Alright, so it's just 60 feet, 6 inches of baseball.

Jay was inspired by his two 4-month-old girls who were still living at his house in the Chicago region. An emotional Jay remarked, "They get to know Dad never quit, which means a lot to me." "It certainly has more meaning now than it did in the past." Jay's debut impressed Carlos Mendoza, manager of the Mets.

Alright. Entering here and hurling blows," Mendoza said. He managed to complete the game. He was terrific for us in a respectable two innings, especially considering that it was his major league debut. He attacked batters, threw strikes, and kept the ball on the ground.
