Beyond The Scoreboard-"The Jets’ next phase of offseason"

Aaron Rodgers is on track to play without constraints for the New York Jets in a few weeks.

Coach Robert Saleh said Friday, during the team's first day of rookie minicamp workouts, that Rodgers has looked well as he works his way back eight months after injuring his left Achilles tendon in his Jets debut.

"He's here, he's working," Saleh explained. "I mean, he can still sling it. Obviously, he's still in the midst of his rehabilitation, but there are no concerns about his progress."

The Jets begin organized team activities, popularly known as "phase three" of offseason training, on May 20, when they may do non-contact 11-on-11 drills during practice. And Rodgers, if in attendance at the Voluntary sessions should allow for full participation.

"It's naturally managed because of the phase one, phase two part of it," Saleh said in an interview. "But once phase three hits, we're not anticipating any restrictions from what we can and can not do with him." Rodgers was hurt only four snaps into the Jets' season-opening victory against Buffalo on September 11. He underwent surgery to repair his Achilles tendon two days later and was proactive in his recovery and rehabilitation, aiming to return late in the season if New York remained in the postseason race. The Jets failed to remain in postseason contention in late December, which Rodgers had hoped would be his return date, and his injury had not fully healed, so the four-time NFL MVP concentrated on his return this season.

Saleh stated during the NFL meetings in Orlando, Florida, in March that Rodgers was scheduled to practice when the Jets opened optional OTAs, and that plan remains in place.

General manager Joe Douglas concentrated on upgrading the offense. During free agency, the Packers added left tackle Tyron Smith and left guard John Simpson to their offensive line, as well as right tackle Morgan Moses from Baltimore. Last week, New York picked Penn State offensive tackle Olu Fashanu with the eleventh overall choice.

The Jets also recruited some playmakers for Rodgers, including former Chargers wide receiver Mike Williams, who will compliment Garrett Wilson. They selected former Western Kentucky wide receiver Malachi Corley in the third round and then added Wisconsin's Braelon Allen (fourth round) and South Dakota State's Isaiah Davis (fifth round) to join Breece Hall and Israel Abanikanda in the backfield. get to work. There's still much work to be done. The most important thing is to keep all of these guys healthy. But we're quite enthused about this bunch." The Jets' draft selections worked off to the side during the first rookie minicamp practice, as is customary for picked players, while undrafted and unsigned free agents participated in team exercises to impress the coaching staff.

Fashanu did not accomplish much, however, later informing reporters that he had a "minor" quadriceps injury when running the 40-yard sprint at the NFL combine in Indianapolis in February. The Jets have signed 17 undrafted free agents, including Duke safety Al Blades Jr., the nephew of former Seahawks standout safety Bennie Blades. Florida quarterback Peewee Jarrett, who threw 32 touchdown passes last season, and edge rusher Braiden McGregor, who recorded 4 1/2 sacks for national champion Michigan last year.
