Welcome to the live coverage of WrestleMania 40 in Philadelphia, starting on Night 1 on Bleacher Report.
The result of almost a year's worth of stories is this event. While the majority of feuds have developed in the past several months, Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns have been involved in intermittent bouts since The American Nightmare emerged victorious in the 2023 men's Royal Rumble event.
Although he didn't win last year, he did manage to win the Rumble again in January, which earned him another chance to defend the WWE Universal Championship. Rhodes and Seth Rollins battled against Reigns and The Rock in a tag match prior to Rhodes' Sunday matchup against The Tribal Chief. Triple H appeared to greet us to the 40th WrestleMania, following Coco Jones' rendition of the national anthem. After that, Becky Lynch made a special appearance and began narrating a few excerpts from her book. The band Motionless in White played Ripley to the ring.
After the bell, they started to work, with The Man scoring the first significant takedown by sending the champion out of the ring with a flying dropkick. Though neither lady felt in control for very long, The Eradicator took over and started pounding Lynch in the corner.
Given that these two are renowned to engage in physically demanding battles, it should come as no surprise that they made this seem like a very contested battle.
Many excellent solo routines and movements were displayed. In order to build herself up for her finisher, Lynch concentrated a lot of attention on the arm Ripley had in a cast until Friday. However, The Eradicator locked in her famous standing reverse cloverleaf before The Man could apply her iconic armbar. If it wasn't going to be the main event, this was the ideal match to place in the opening slot. Both Superstars do a fantastic job conveying every huge move and making every near-fall count.
The Eradicator maintained her championship and won the match by countering the Manhandle Slam from the middle rope, hitting the Riptide into the turnbuckle and then hitting another in the center of the ring.
After a fantastic battle with Lynch, Mami will maintain her unchallenged reign of domination for another year. Well done, ladies. For the tag championships in a six-pack ladder match, Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa, R-Truth and The Miz, Pete Dunne and Tyler Bate, Autin Theory and Grayson Waller, and Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods faced off against Damian Priest and Finn Bálor.Usually ladder bouts are hectic, but that's not the case when 12 guys are vying for two sets of belts. There will be a lot of fun involved, but it may also be difficult to follow at times.Truth had several hilarious moments, like as when he believed he had won by pinfall. Not too long into the match, Theory and Waller defeated the SmackDown tag champions to capture the belts, but other teams stopped them before they could seize the unfinished belts.
The main thing is that the belts are finally separated between Raw and SmackDown, and each brand will have its own set of championships once again. We can fight until the cows come home about who teams should have won.
Although there were some entertaining moments and moves, this ladder fight won't stick out in the vast catalog of WWE matchups. Though there was some storyline interspersed with a number of major hits, it was largely simply a lot of fun and the crowd was really enthusiastic.
R-Truth had his WrestleMania moment as he won the Raw Tag Team Championships to cap off a fun match, capping off years of being appreciated buffoon. The crowd shouted when The Miz climbed the ladder and gave him an embrace in celebration of their win.
Even though Angel, Berto, and Elektra Lopez weren't in the ring with Santos Escobar and Dominik Mysterio, they still looked great and had new equipment.
The LWO, Andrade, and Rey Mysterio were also outfitted in unique clothing.
This contest was fast-paced and thrilling, as predicted. Veteran players Rey, Andrade, and Escobar are well-respected, while Dom has improved significantly since joining the starting lineup. The four men shared the desire to combine WWE's distinctive wrestling style with some vintage lucha techniques.
Although a larger bout would have been excellent for all those present at ringside, it was probably a smart decision to limit this to a two-on-two battle so these four Superstars could showcase their skills. After becoming engaged at ringside with LWO and Legado del Fantasma, Wilde executed his trademark slingshot technique. Dom was stopped from using a chair by two masked guys, which gave Rey the opportunity to perform a 619 and then splash to Escobar to win.
Legendary players Jason Kelce and Lane Johnson of the Philadelphia Eagles emerged from behind the masks to rejoice with a victorious Rey and El Idolo.
Even though the game was a little overbooked in the end, it was still a fun game with a few appearances to delight the local Philadelphia supporters. Although brother vs. brother battles had been featured on WrestleMania previously, like as Bret vs. Owen Hart and Matt vs. Jeff Hardy, this was the first time two twins have squared off at The Show of Shows. Nikki and Brie Bella never squared off at 'Mania, but rather on pay-per-view.
To kick things off early, Jey launched herself into the ring with a suicide dive even before Jimmy arrived. Jimmy needed some time to stabilize himself, but once he did, he channeled their father, Rikishi, with a couple running hip strikes.
Rather than featuring the most thrilling scenes, this match spent much of its time presenting a tale. It succeeded in some situations, but in others, it seemed like they were going too slowly and the throng was starting to The most of the emotional parts were well-sold by Jey and Jimmy, and when Jimmy began pleading with Jey for forgiveness, the audience became quite attentive. Before Jimmy could bust him with a superkick and land a Uso splash for a two-count, Jey grabbed him up and gave him a hug.
After Jey got back up, he won the pin with a Uso splash of his own. It was the proper decision to not engage Solo Sikoa.
Although it was acceptable, this fell short of WrestleMania. This may have been more well received on any other PPV. When Bianca Belair, Jade Cargill, and Naomi faced off against Dakota Kai, Asuka, and Kairi Sane, they made a spectacular entrance. They were introduced and given a private elevator.
Six-person tag team bouts often have a predictable flow because the format is meant to allow each participant some time in the ring and a chance to shine.
All of that, though, doesn't matter if the action is enjoyable, and this one had plenty to enjoy. Belair's feats of strength and dexterity were as remarkable as ever.
The crowd erupted in cheers when Cargill eventually tagged into the contest and proceeded to attack every member of the other team. Easily catching Sane off guard, she delivered a backbreaker.
She accepted the victory for her squad in a fine, albeit unexpectedly brief, match. This would have been far more memorable had there been a few more minutes.
Cargill had a great success in her WrestleMania debut. WWE women's wrestling appears to have a bright future thanks to athletes like these.
Before Sami Zayn entered the arena to battle Gunther for the Intercontinental Championship, Kevin Owens was present to wish him luck.
Zayn launched a surprise attack, cornering The Ring General with many chops. His aggressiveness appeared to take Gunther by surprise, but a German suplex ended his momentum entirely.
Zayn is a born babyface, but he becomes even more of the underdog when facing off against a monstrous heel like Gunther. He had a sizable following from the audience, who often yelled in encouragement.
This contest was set up precisely as you might anticipate. For brief periods, the victor was in control, but Zayn would eventually recover and Gunther would find a method to stop him, repeating the cycle. Both guys were clearly bruised and bumped, but what surprised me was how much redder Gunther's chest was than Zayn's, considering that the Austrian is more likely to get welts.
The challenger's family was there, which increased the intensity of the physical encounter as anticipated.
Several of Gunther's most powerful blows, like as a huge clothesline and two vicious powerbombs, missed Zayn. Growing increasingly irritated, the champion began pounding The Underdog from the Underground while insulting his spouse. Though Zayn was playing with his opponent, she started to show indications of life.
He gave Gunther a Helluva Kick and then a tremendous brainbuster, nailing him. For the victory and the pin, he gave Gunther two more Helluva Kicks.
Zayn is The Underdog From the Underground was the one who ultimately ended Gunther's legendary rule.
The primary match of Night 1 between The Rock and Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins set the terms for Night 2. Between the conclusion of Zayn's bout and the start of this one, there were over thirty minutes.
After the bell, all four men engaged in a prolonged staredown until Rollins and Reigns made the decision to start for their respective sides. The Visionary was promptly taken out by The Tribal Chief, who also trash-talked about finishing the battle quickly.
Rhodes attempted to take the initiative as he tagged in, but he soon found himself on the defensive. For his first match in eight years, Rollins returned to the ring and engaged The Rock in combat. Rocky shoved him down with ease, but The Visionary simplygrinned and briefly displayed his superiority over The Great One by outwitting him.
Things got up when Rhodes and The Rock were in the ring together. The first few minutes were just brief posturing and exchanges.
After Rollins and The Great One battled into the audience, Rock threatened to fire the referee because he was a member of the TKO board of directors, which owns WWE.
The Rock began cheating after that without thinking twice about the repercussions. This was all Rock and Reigns destroying Rollins and Rhodes for a long while.
Everything was done to give the impression that the babyfaces were in an awkward situation, and it was successful. However, it also resulted in a less thrilling match than it ought to have been. Not that anyone was expecting a five-star classic, but they fell short of elevating this experience to the status of a main event.
From a sports entertainment perspective, this was fun, but it lacked pro wrestling elements. Following a long and overscheduled match, The Rock successfully pinned Rhodes, securing Bloodline Rules as the featured event on Sunday.
